Darna is actually a retooling of Ravelo's earlier character, Varga, that he also wrote and illustrated himself. This character first appeared in Bulaklak Magazine, Volume 4, #17 on July 23, 1947. Ravelo then left Bulaklak Magazine due to some differences with the publication's editors.
Darna had also appeared in a number of films and several television series through the decades which have far overshadowed her actual comics tenure and is one of the most popular Filipino superheroes.
No wonder that it was really a delightful news for many Filipino people to know that there will be a remake of the film after the portrayals of this amazing and gorgeous actresses including Rosa del Rosario, Liza Moreno, Eva Montes, Gina Pareño, Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Rio Locsin, Sharon Cuneta, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari, Regine Velasquez, Angel Locsin, and Marian Rivera on the said iconic role. Kapamilya young actress Liza Soberano has been the first choice on the said film but she, unfortunately, withdraws from the project because of her injured figure.
After her withdrawal from the iconic project, a lot of talented individuals and actresses had auditioned on the said iconic role. Even the Binibining Pilipinas 2019 contestant Vickie Rushton is very vocal on her dream of becoming the next Darna. She was a recently on “Tonight With Boy Abunda”. She even gave a sample of her reenactment of Darna’s famous line as “Ding” gave her the magical stone and she would swallow it and shout “Darna!”.
It had actually elicited a lot of mixed reactions from the netizens. Some commented that the role doesn’t really suit her while some defended her and commended her soft and sweet voice as she shouts “Darna!”. She is a former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate and the girlfriend of actor Jason Abalos. She was also crowned as Mutya ng Pilipinas 2011 and Binibining Pilipinas 2018 First Runner Up.
She had also bagged numerous special awards in the Binibining Pilipinas 2019 including Miss Ever Bilena, Jag Denim Queen, Manila Bulletin Award, Miss Creamsilk, Miss World Balance, and Bb. Poten Cee Gandang Palaban but unfortunately she failed on the question and answer portion.
